I've owned Mac's since 2011 and have never used antivirus. I use the free version of Avast Security as recommended by my school. I used both Sophos and Avast and I used to prefer Sophos until they decided to make the switch to being browser-based. You literally cannot do any system scan unless you log into your account in sophos.com and click to scan your machine there. Clicking on the Sophos icon in the menu tray in your macbook only says 'You are Protected' and 'Show all activity.' Click 'Show all activity' and you'll get redirected to their site. Avast has everything in the program itself that you download. It functions as a traditional antivirus and program in general requiring no online access. Avast, though, has many products and allows you to try them for a free trial and sign up in their antivirus program. It's not adware as I don't remember getting annoying pop ups prompting me to sign up for anything, but some people are irked by it. But as far as scanning and antivirus capabilities go, I'd say they both are equally good. You can look online for which one finds more viruses and the differences between them is either 0 or like 1% depending on which site you're looking at.
